HISTORY
Welwyn Cemetery was established in 1905 on the land cornering the hamlet in the northeast corner of the SW 1/4 of 34-15-30 donated by Mr. Fallis. The administration and care was to be the responsibility of the local council which at that time would be the council of Local Improvement District No. 121, until the village was incorporated in 1907. The cemetery reveals much history, not only of the people but of the times, each grave marker tells a personal story.
In 1936, a committee known as the "Homemakers Club took full responsibility of the care and maintainance of the grounds Throughout the years, improvements have gradually taken place made possible by fundraising efforts, donations and support from municipalities and other organizations. The tall pine trees that border the cemetery grounds were planted in 1939. In 1979, a large cairn was erected at the cemetery acknowledge the donation of the property and the work and support of the Homemakers Club and contributions of the donations received. In 1985, a new fence and gate were placed at the cemetery by the Welwyn Women's Institute. Over the years there was additional upgrades to fence, storage shed added.
In 2000, the village of Welwyn entered into an agreement with the Welwyn Historical Society for the creation and management of a Welwyn Cemetery Millennium Trust fund. The purpose of this fund was providing financial resources for the perpetual care, maintenance, general repair, and improvement of the Welwyn Cemetery. The Society would be a board of three, that the Village would rely on for the administering of the fund and its purpose of care of the Cemetery.
In May 2018, the Village of Welwyn voluntarily restructured into the RM of Moosomin No. 121. The RM and the Society has continued with the agreement for the Cemetery, and the Millennium Trust Fund remains under the management of the three person board of the Society. A columbarium was added to the cemetery in 2023, it is for cremation placement and a memorial wall.
